The Role Of The Advisor

            The advisor should encourage students to accept responsibility and help them recognize the importance of their role in relationship to group goals.  Advisors should monitor the group process and offer suggestions that may assist students in their decision-making.  The advisor should not assume control of the group by making decisions and directing the planning process for group events. 

  • The advisor may serve as a resource person in the development, enhancement and promotion of programs.
  • The advisor may provide valuable assistance in creating opportunities for educational and personal programs.
  • The advisor my provide direct assistance in the planning and evaluation of the overall program by providing critical information overlooked by club members during planning discussions.
  • The advisor may attend events sponsored by the group and assist in setting the tone for the occasion.
  • The advisor may suggest ways group meetings can be improved.
  • The advisor should be available in emergency situations.
  • The advisor may analyze decisions and make comments.  If an idea is inappropriate the advisor should try to encourage the students to consider other alternatives.
  • The advisor should be available to help resolve personal conflict among group members and conflict during decision making processes.
  • The advisor should be well informed about all plans and activities of the group.  Regular attendance at meetings and frequent consultation with student officers will help achieve this objective.
  • The advisor may serve as a historian.  Current students should be able to turn to the advisor for information regarding traditional activities.
  • The advisor should be aware of the financial condition of the club and assist (but not take direct responsibility) with financial reporting, tracking and decision-making.
