Chemical Hygiene Plan

Chemicals: disposal

Chemicals cannot simply be flushed down the sink or into a drain.   Even if chemicals have been used, they can still react negatively with other chemicals that might be in the sink or even with water itself.  Your chemical hygiene officer, or the material safety data sheet, should be able to tell you if it is safe to dispose of the chemical you working with down the drain or in some other simple manner.   If it is not, your building should have a chemical waste storage area, which might be the same place is your chemical storage area, where it will be kept along with other chemicals to await proper chemical disposal, which will not be longer than one year.   Chemicals of this type must be disposed of with a licensed chemical waste disposal company.   Dakota State University is dedicated to the safety of our environment and pays for the services of these companies to ensure that our waste is disposed of in a manner that is consistent with law and that protects both those of us who work at Dakota State University as well as our environment.
