of disability in the admission or access to, or employment in its programs or
activities. Robert Jackson, ADA coordinator has been designated to coordinate
compliance with the non-discrimination requirements. Information concerning the
provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the rights provided

MANDATORY REGISTRATION
No student will be allowed to attend a course unless
officially registered, whether for college credit or as an auditor, by deadlines
specified in the academic calendar.
AUDITING A COURSE
Auditing college courses without credit is permitted. Audit
tuition is the same as regular tuition. Auditors must indicate their intent to
audit a course at the time of registration for that course. Auditors will not
receive college credit nor will they be permitted to take credit examinations
for the course audited. Change from audit to credit or credit to audit must be
made no later than the end of the published late registration period.
FEE STATEMENT RECEIPT
The fee statement will identify the classes in which you are
officially registered. The charges associated with the courses, accepted Federal
Financial, scholarships, etc. will be deducted from the charges. It will be
mailed to you prior to the beginning of the semester.
VOTER REGISTRATION
As
a citizen of United States, you have the privilege to vote on your county, state
and national leaders. As a part of the Higher Education Act of 1998, Congress
directed schools receiving Federal financial aid to assist students who have not
yet registered to vote.
To register to vote, as a South Dakota resident, you may obtain a voter
registration form at the Secretary of State’s web site
www.state.sd.us/sos/vote.htm.
Once completed you should print and mail it to your respective county auditor
office. The addresses for all county auditors in SD are also found on this site.
If your home state is other than South Dakota, you may use the national form
available at http://www.fec.gov
To be eligible to vote in an election the voter registration form is to be
received 15 days before the election.
PAYMENT OF TUITION AND FEES
Students may make full payment of tuition and fees upon
receipt of the fee statement. STANDING IN LINES UPON YOUR RETURN TO CAMPUS MAY
BE AVOIDED BY SENDING YOUR PAYMENT THROUGH THE MAIL.
For those students wishing to make payment at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse,
payment will be by appointment. Your appointment time will be included with your
fee statement.
DROPPED/WITHDRAWN COURSES
Provision is made for students to request necessary class
schedule changes during the published drop/add period each academic semester. Students are encouraged to drop and/or add
classes online by using Web Advisor. Drop/add forms are also available in the
Enrollment Services Office and in the Deans’ offices to facilitate this process.
Note: When the deadline to make changes to a class schedule falls on a Saturday,
Sunday, or holiday, students who prefer to make class schedule changes in person
must deliver those changes to the Enrollment Services Office before the end of
the work day that precedes the published date. THE ENROLLMENT SERVICES OFFICE
WILL NOT ACCEPT CLASS SCHEDULE CHANGES AFTER THE PUBLISHED DEADLINE.
Only the most unusual circumstances warrant requests for class schedule changes
after the published deadline. These must be requested, in writing, and must be
approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Fall Semester 2005
August 29 – September 8
Dropped courses meeting the full semester will not appear
on permanent record (100% refund)

automatically recorded as ‘W’ (no refund)
Spring Semester 2006
January 17 – January 26 Dropped courses meeting the full semester will not appear
on permanent record (100% refund)
January 27 – April 7 Withdrawn courses meeting the full semester will be
automatically recorded as ‘W’ (no refund)
For classes meeting other than the full semester consult your class schedule
booklet for published deadlines.
CLASS WITHDRAWAL
A student may withdraw from a class and receive an automatic
‘W’ from the end of the official drop/add period to the last day to receive
automatic ‘W’. For courses that meet less than the semester length, the last day
to withdraw is also published on the on-line class schedule. This date is
further publicized through the catalog and posted reminders. The forms for
withdrawal are available in Enrollment Services and the Deans’ offices. The
student is issued a grade of ‘W’ to indicate withdrawal. The ‘W’ grade does not
affect the student’s grade point average. However, it does impact the percent of
attempted courses completed for Federal financial aid satisfactory academic
progress. Students are not allowed to
withdraw from specific classes after that time except under extenuating
circumstances and only with the approval of the Vice President of Academic
Affairs. Anticipated course failure does not constitute an extenuating
circumstance.
Students withdrawing from the university must follow the procedure under the
heading “Withdrawal from the University” in the University catalog.
WITHDRAWAL FROM THE
UNIVERSITY
When a
student withdraws from all their courses in any academic term, they withdraw
from the University. If a student is enrolled at more than one Board of Regents
institution, the student must withdraw from all courses at all institutions to
be considered withdrawn and eligible for any refund. The Office of Student
Services, located in the Trojan Center, (605) 256-5121 must be contacted in
order to initiate a student’s withdrawal from the University and to notify all
appropriate university offices of that withdrawal. The effective date of
withdrawal is the date the student initiates the withdrawal process officially,
either verbally or in writing, with the Office of Student Services at DSU. The
student must also contact the appropriate office at all institutions enrolled to
complete the withdrawal process. Failure to officially withdraw will result in
failing grades in all courses, forfeiture of any possible refund of charges, and
impacts Federal financial aid eligibility. Additionally, a student is withdrawn
from the university if classes have begun and the university administratively
withdraws the student for reasons such as non-payment of tuition and fees,
disciplinary sanctions, etc.
Courses offered on other than a full-term basis will be prorated according to
the same schedule. See course listing for deadline information. Exemptions from
this policy are determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. See the
University Catalog for details and examples on Withdrawal from the University
Refund and Return of Federal Funds Policy.
REPEATING A COURSE
A student may repeat any course to improve the
course grade. Beginning Fall 2003, a student will be allowed a total
of 3 takes for undergraduate courses (001-499) for which credit is
counted toward graduation once. The student must petition the Vice
President for Academic Affairs for permission to take an
undergraduate course more than 3 times. The Audit (AU) grade is the
only grade that does not count as a take of a course. All other
grades, including a withdrawal (W) count as a take of a course. All
completed courses remain on the student's transcript but only the
last grade earned will be counted in the cumulative grade point
average. Please refer to BOR Policy 2:8 and BOR Policy 2:10 for
additional information on grade point average calculations, academic
amnesty and repeated enrollment in the same course.

published prerequisites prior to the start of the class. Students with questions
should consult the appropriate dean prior to registration.
CANCELLATION OF CLASSES
The administration may cancel classes which have low
enrollments. Notice of class cancellation will be posted as soon as enrollment
and cost data are available.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
Designed to acquaint new students with the University
environment, its expectations, opportunities and services, New Student
Orientation involves a series of activities conducted the day
classes begin each fall. The Student Success Seminar, required of all
first-time, degree-seeking students, involves a series of meetings during the
first half of each semester in which new students meet in small groups with a
faculty member serving as facilitator. Further information regarding New Student
Orientation is provided at the summer pre-registration sessions. Questions
should be directed to the Student Services Center (605-256-5146).
FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID
Accepted
degree-seeking students making satisfactory academic progress are eligible for
Federal financial aid through completion of the Free Application of Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) for each academic year. To be considered for any Federal
financial aid award, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6
credit hours (graduate – 5 credits) through DSU and the SD Board of Regent
Schools. If an undergraduate student
applicant is enrolled in less than 6 credit hours, is degree seeking and meeting
satisfactory progress eligibility, Federal Pell Grant may be awarded. Students
who are less than half time must contact the Director of Financial Aid for
Federal Pell Grant eligibility.
Special Note: If enrolled in a rolling enrollment
course(s) or in a course(s) that does not begin at the start of the term, the
financial aid award amount will be based on enrollment status on the last day of
drop and add for the term. Subsequent enrollment within a term for a class that
begins after the start of the term, does not count toward Federal financial aid
eligibility. Please contact the Financial Aid Office regarding special
conditions for correspondence courses.
Additional Note: Students who have already obtained
their first bachelors degree must submit an appeal for Federal financial aid
consideration at DSU if not a regular accepted graduate student. This can be
obtained from the Office of Enrollment Services, completed and returned to the
Director of Financial Aid for consideration of Federal financial aid
eligibility.

The University considers
