Dr. Douglas D. Knowlton
President of Dakota
State University
Dr. Knowlton began his duties
as the 21st president of Dakota State University on January
5, 2004.
His BA degree is from the
University of Denver-Phi Beta Kappa, his MA and Ph.D. in
clinical psychology from the University of North Dakota, and
he did postdoctoral studies at Baylor College of Medicine in
Texas. He is the former Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, where he served
for six years. He held faculty positions at the University
of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
He served as the director of
the Child Evaluation and Treatment Program at UND’s Medical
Center Rehabilitation Hospital for twelve years. For eleven
years, he was a clinical psychologist in private practice
with the Family Institute in Grand Forks, North Dakota. For
ten years he served on the State Board of Technical Colleges
and for three years on the Minnesota State Colleges and
Universities board.
Dr. Knowlton is currently a
member of Rotary International, on the governing board of
First Presbyterian Church in Madison, a member of the Lake
Area Improvement Corporation, South Dakota’s representative
to the council of representatives for American Association
of State Colleges and Universities and a member of the board
of trustees for the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.
Dr. Knowlton and his wife,
Sharon, are both natives of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They
have two sons, Justin and Jordan.
