Diversity Plan
Background:
In the fall of 2001, President Tunheim appointed an institutional
Diversity Committee and charged that group with development of a
campus-wide diversity plan. Membership consisted of the Diversity
Services Coordinator (chair), the Vice President/Dean of Student
Affairs, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Administrative
Assistant to the President, two representatives from each academic
college and one representative from E-Education Services, the Library,
Athletics, and Enrollment Services. Other staff members of Diversity
Services were involved as needed. The committee gathered input from each
campus department and then worked together to consolidate the various
departmental goals and initiatives into a campus-wide plan. The
resulting plan was approved by the Executive Council and the various
governing boards of the institution in March 2002. Timelines and
assessment criteria were added to the plan by the Executive Council
(with input from various campus units) during the summer. This plan will
be reviewed on an annual basis to assess progress made toward meeting
the stated goals and to evaluate the targets set for each functional
unit of the institution.

Introduction:
Dakota State University is committed to providing an opportunity to
learn in a rich environment free of intolerance and bigotry, one that
teaches and honors the importance of the acceptance of differences in
others. All members of the community have a responsibility to make DSU
campuses and classrooms welcoming and respectful of each member’s
differences and/or abilities. An investment in diversity is more than
the act of recruiting diverse peoples to campus or celebrating
ethnically themed events or holidays.
