GOVERNOR JANKLOW TO RECEIVE AWARD AT COMPUTING SYMPOSIUM The Center of Excellence at Dakota State University will be hosting the Second Annual Symposium and Exposition at the Oaks Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls on April 7 and 8. Entitled "Computing Excellence in the Work Force 1999," the sessions consist of papers on cutting edge computing technologies, information systems education delivery, and technology management issues from academic as well as corporate presenters. The symposium is aimed at providing opportunities for individuals to share and learn new techniques and technologies, to exchange ideas and views, to engage in constructive dialogue about computing solutions and workplace problems, and to identify directions for future research that are useful to South Dakota businesses and agencies. Delegates from different segments of businesses, government agencies, and institutions of higher education are expected to attend. The symposium will begin with a lunch forum on April 7 dealing with the "Information Technology Personnel Shortage." The Non-Profit Management Institution will sponsor a video presentation on the Year 2000 Problem on April 7 and an expert forum on the same topic on April 8. On April 8, there will be a featured technical session on Internet II followed by a forum with selected Presidents of South Dakota universities and Dr. Perry, Executive Director of the Board or Regents, about their visions for campus involvement with this research network. Governor Janklow will deliver the keynote during the banquet that evening. Governor Janklow will be receiving the 1999 "Person of the Year Award" for his many contributions to computing excellence in South Dakota. According to Dr. Koong, Dean of the Center of Excellence, "South Dakota is privilege to have a Governor that is a visionary. Under his leadership, our teachers are better prepared to use technology for instruction through the TTL Academy Program, our educators are encouraged to use technology for instruction through the Governors Technology Grant Program, and our educational institutions are equipped for technology through the Wiring the Classroom Project. All these initiatives have brought about a better-trained workforce to meet the computer technology needs of South Dakota businesses and agencies." The exposition on April 7th and 8th will feature exhibitions from companies based in South Dakota and from other parts of the nation. Some of the major corporations participating in the exposition include Circa Design Co., Direct Technology, Gateway, Micro Medical Systems, Non-Profit Management Institute, Raytheon STX Corporation, South Dakota Network, Inc. and U S West Communications. The exposition hall is open free of charge to the public. Individuals may still register for the symposium, luncheon, and banquet at the door. |
