FIRST ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS Over one hundred registrants attended the first annual Symposium sponsored by the new Dakota State University Center of Excellence in Computer Information Systems on March 20. The Symposium theme for this year, "Concepts and Techniques of On-line Education," featured over twenty presentations by representatives of South Dakota higher education institutions. Presenters and attendees included representatives from over ten higher education institutions in South Dakota and Minnesota, as well as faculty and staff from the K-12 community. "We were extremely pleased with the turn-out for this first endeavor. DSU is very fortunate, as we have the technology and talent already on campus to support the symposium," said Dr. David Cook, Academic Vice President and Provost and Director of this years Symposium. Keynote speaker for the 1998 Symposium was Mark Kelly, Director of State and Education Sales for Gateway, 2000. Mr. Kelly is responsible for all sales and customer support functions that market to state and local government, higher education, and K-12 institutions in the United States. His address focused on issues facing higher education and K-12 schools as they implement technology in their institutions. Session topics included on-line writing labs, on-line testing, teaching web courses, and providing student services on-line. The Symposium will be an annual event hosted by the Center of Excellence in Computer Information Systems. The Center was established at DSU in 1997 to foster a highly competitive academic program, conduct research and development, and provide expert consultation statewide in the area of computer information systems. If you would like to be included in the mailing for next years symposium, email Symposium98@columbia.dsu.edu. -end- |
