DSU’s Haas to present at conference

Madison – Mark Haas, assistant professor for the College of Liberal Arts at Dakota State University, will be a presenter at the annual Northern Arizona University Web ’97 conference held in Flagstaff, AZ on June 12-15. The conference is in collaboration with the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications.

The conference will focus on issues surrounding the design, creation, and delivery of web-based course materials and the integration of the Web into higher education courses.

According to Haas, the conference will present educators with practical answers to questions like "How do I get started?", "What are the elements of a good Web course?", and "How do I assess learning in Web-based courses?" Various course-creation and delivery tools will also be showcased.

In his presentation, titled "Construction and Community: Creating a Web-based Course", Haas will explore the theory and practice of a web-based course, DSU’s ENGL 405, Technical Report Writing. Participants will be able to use the Internet to access the course material and see how the course operated during the presentation.

"For the first section, Planning, I will give an overview of the goals, elements, and environment of the course, followed by a discussion of course-specific decisions. In the Implementation section, I will demonstrate the construction and delivery of the course, providing hands-on experience for participants. The final section is Evaluation, in which I will discuss the results of the course and highlight problems and possibilities," said Haas.
