Dakota State Hosts English Teachers

Madison -- Dakota State University hosted the annual meeting of the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English on April 3-4. Approximately 25 teachers from throughout the state participated. The theme of the conference was "Diversity: In the Classroom, In the Approach."

Twelve presentations and round table discussions were attended by the participants. Presenters from Dakota State University included Rise Smith with "Don’t Let Your Students Be Roadkill on the Information Highway", Molly Turner-Lammers with "Computers in Writing", and Patty Ericsson, who moderated a panel of writing teachers and directors from South Dakota universities on the theme "Connections Between High School and College."

Several people were also honored at the Friday evening banquet. They included Andrew Travers, who won the NCTE Achievement Award in Writing for 1996; Sharon Olbertson, who was selected as the SDCTE Teacher of the Year; and Linda Hasselstrom, who was chosen South Dakota Author of the Year.

Co-chairpersons for the event were Jim Swanson of Dakota State University and Dodie Bemis of Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown.
