DSU to Host Model UN Event

Dakota State University College of Arts and Sciences will host its first Model United Nation’s event April 4 at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse. Participant registration begins at 9:00am with roll call of the General Assembly scheduled for 10:00am. A panel of researchers from EROS will present information on United Nations Environmental Projects from 12:00 – 1:00pm.

Students from a variety of classes at DSU have adapted coursework for the event including speech, composition, history, biology, and Spanish. Over 50 countries will be represented. The students will be presenting, debating, and voting on resolutions involving the privatization of water and the rights of indigenous peoples. Students needed to create a video introduction of their country, conduct research on at least 1 of 2 resolutions (one deals with water privatization and one with rights of indigenous people) in order to prepare a position paper and a speech.

Participating faculty/courses include Kelly Macleod (speech), Viki Johnson (sociology), Nancy Moose (comp), Janice Jayes (political science), Justin Blessinger (comp), Lynn Ryan (Spanish), Maureen Murphy (comp), Bob Jackson (speech), Christina Blessinger (ESL), and John Nelson’s ENGL 201 class will be serving as the press corp, creating multimedia presentations of the event. Maureen Murphy has chaired the planning committee. Joe Walwick will be the President of the General Assembly, and Nancy Moose will be the Parliamentarian for the proceedings.

The event is open to the public and will be webcast live from DSU’s website.
