DSU Trains Teachers to Teach Students with Laptops Again this summer Dakota State University (DSU) is training high school teachers and staff about teaching in classrooms where students will have laptop computers. Dakota State is providing technical training and professional development to support the State’s Classroom Connections project, which helps each high school student in certain districts to have a laptop computer. The project is one of the State’s 2010 Education Initiative goals. Another twenty-one South Dakota school districts are participating in Classroom Connections, so 4,600 more students will have mobile computers. That brings the total number of high school students with tablets and laptops to 9,600 in 41 school districts across the state. The technical training teaches participants how to build an environment to support a one-to-one computing program in which each student has a portable computer. The professional development trains teachers to use tablet technology to engage students in active learning. The SD Department of Education is funding the extensive training. DSU faculty involved in the training include Judy Dittman, Tom Farrell, Mark Hawkes, Lynette Molstad Gorder (project coordinator) and Josh Pauli. Involved DSU staff include Donna Fawbush, Stacy Krusemark, Mike Waldner and Cecelia Wittmayer.
