Dakota State Alums to Serve as Parade Marshals

Dwayne “Jake” and Shirley Jacobson will serve as parade marshals for the 2007 Dakota State Homecoming parade, Saturday, September 29.  The Jacobsons are alumni of Dakota State, and long time supporters of the university.  They have not missed an annual homecoming since arriving on campus as students in 1965 (Jake) and 1966 (Shirley.)

Shirley Christensen Jacobson is a native of Baltic and a 1970 graduate of Dakota State with a degree in elementary education.  She was homecoming queen in 1968, and was active in campus organizations.  Shirley taught in Adrian, MN, Montrose and Garretson, retiring in 2003 after 33 years in education.  She stays busy as a substitute teacher and with her hobbies of gardening, traveling, and antiquing.

Dwayne “Jake” Jacobson is a Salem native and graduated from Dakota State in 1970 with a degree in education.  On campus Jake was a resident advisor in Higbie Hall, and president of the union board from 1967-1969.  He was also chairman of the Higbie float building committee from 1967-1969.  Jake has been with Brown and Saenger in Sioux Falls for 16 years, and in commission sales for a total of 33 years.  He served as mayor of Garretson for 2 years, was on the town council, and was president of the Garretson Land Acquisition Development Corporation.

Jake and Shirley met in college and married in 1971.  They have lived in Garretson since 1974.  The Jacobsons have two children. Matt is a 2000 graduate of Dakota State and lives in Sioux Falls where he works at Wells Fargo Financial.  Amanda Jacobson Schulzko lives in Bloomington, MN with husband Matt and new baby Noah. Amanda works in an attorney’s office and Nick attends chiropractic school.

The Trojan Days parade is part of a day of festivities marking DSU’s homecoming.  The parade begins at 10:00am and will travel south to north on Egan Avenue in Madison.  A tailgate party at Trojan Field begins at noon, followed by DSU football at 1:30.  DSU head football coach Tom Shea will host a 5th Quarter gathering at Rumors following the game, and Dakota Jam will feature two live bands at the Madison armory. For more information on homecoming, contact the alumni office at 605-256-5857 or jona.schmidt@dsu.edu.
