DSU Gets Math & Science Teaching Grant Dakota State University College of Arts & Science has received $50,000 in No Child Left Behind funding from the U.S. Department of Education. They will use the grant to facilitate a workshop to help teachers use technology to teach math and science July 30-August 1. DSU will train teachers to teach inquiry-based science with interdisciplinary strategies that integrate technology, pharmacology, and language arts. Participants will learn how to integrate technology into science lessons using physiology sensors and software, and electronic lab notebooks. They will learn how to integrate the topics of disease and pharmacology into science lessons using online resources to make content interesting and relevant. They will study integrating language arts into science lessons, using reading strategies to enhance students’ interest in reading about science. Schools that send a group of teachers will receive a physiology lab set of data collection equipment and software and at least one digital microscope. About $20,000 worth in lab packages of physiology sensors and probes will be distributed to participating schools. These schools will also receive software including a data collection and analysis program. Each participant will receive reference guides, a physiology lab book with ready-to-use experiments and ideas for their classroom, and a DSU computer account to use when they are on campus and to correspond during the school year. Participants without laptop computers can use a DSU tablet computer. This is the fourth such workshop with which DSU faculty have been involved. Dr. Richard Avery, Associate Professor of Mathematics, is the project director. Dr. Jennifer Gross, Assistant Professor of Science Education, is the Principal Investigator. Also involved in the workshop are Dr. Kristel Bakker, Associate Professor of Biology; Dr. Dale Droge, Professor of Biology; Dr. Donna Hazelwood, Professor of Biology; and Kim Jones, Success Center Director. |
