Award-Winning Writer to Speak at DSU Poet, fiction
writer, and memoirist Debra Marquart will visit Dakota State
University on Tuesday, April 3, speaking to classes and ending the
day with a reading from her newest book, a memoir titled The
Horizontal World: Growing Up Wild in the Middle of Nowhere. She
will give a public reading Tuesday evening at 7:00 in the Mundt
Foundation, in the Karl E. Mundt Library. The reading and
discussion is free and open to During part of her life, Marquart's focus was on rock and roll, and she toured and performed with rock and heavy-metal bands. She used these experiences as the focus for her collection of short stories, The Hunger Bone: Rock and Roll Stories, published by New Rivers Press in 2001. She continues to perform with The Bone People, a group that fuses music and poetry and has released two CD collections. Marquart, originally from North Dakota, is currently an Associate Professor of English at Iowa State University. She has published four books--two books of poetry, one collection of short stories, and a memoir. Her work has been published in a wide variety of literary journals and won several awards.
