Dakota State University held the second annual Legends and Legacy dinner in May. The dinner is held to honor donors to the university, and to present faculty and professional excellence awards. The dinner is sponsored by the Dakota State Foundation. Donors were recognized for their gifts to the annual fund at DSU with plaques and certificates. New members of the lifetime giving societies were honored with special collages. Dr. Ernest Teagarden was presented with a new award, the Faculty Legend Award. Teagarden was an instructor at Dakota State for over 30 years and was recognized for the impact he has had on the students, his peers, and the development of the university. DeLon Mork was recognized with the Professional Excellence Award. Mork has been a long-time supporter of Dakota State both personally and through his business, the Madison Dairy Queen. Mork serves on many local and regional boards including membership on the DSU Foundation Board of Directors. The Mork family has an endowed scholarship at DSU in honor of DeLon’s late father DeWayne. Joyce and Clair Welbon were also recognized with the Professional Excellence Award. Joyce is 1962 graduate of Dakota State and serves on the Dakota State Alumni Board of Directors. Clair is active in civic organizations including the Madison Rotary Club where he is the representative of the DSU Rotary Scholarship. The Welbons recently established an endowed scholarship at DSU. Receiving the faculty awards were Dr. Nancy Moose, Dr. Rich Avery, Dr. Vicki Sterling, and Dr. Rick Puetz. Recipients were nominated by their peers at DSU. Dr. Nancy Moose received the D.J. Cline Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is sponsored by DSU Academic Vice President Dr. Cecelia Wittmayer. Dr. Moose has been at DSU since 1981 and is as professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Merrill Hunter Award for Excellence in Research was awarded to Dr. Rich Avery. The award is sponsored by Jon Hunter in honor of his late father Merrill. Dr. Avery has been at DSU since 1998 and is an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences. The DeWayne Mork Award for Excellence in Service was awarded to Dr. Vicki Sterling. The award is sponsored by DeLon Mork in honor of his late father, DeWayne. Dr. Sterling is a professor in the College of Education and has been at DSU since 1977, Dr. Rick Puetz was awarded the Alexander “Sandy” Davidson Award for Excellence in Advising. The award is sponsored by the DSU Foundation. Dr. Puetz has been with DSU since 1983 and is a professor in the College of Business and Information Systems.
