College of Ed Hosts Diversity and Technology Conference The Dakota State University College of Education is sponsoring a Diversity and Technology Education Conference Friday, September 28 in the Kennedy Center on the DSU campus. Sessions start at 8:30am and conclude at 4:00pm. All education majors are invited to attend as class schedules permit. Presenters include WORKPLACE TECHNOLOGY CENTER consultant Brian Lee who will talk about “Using the SmartBoard”. He will discuss the many new features of SMART Botebook 9.7, SMART’s new Senteo interactive classroom “clickers” and the Airliner wireless tablet. Additionally he will discuss SynchronEyes, the classroom management software used in 9-12 Classroom Connections schools and the Tablet computer interaction with the SMART product suite. DSU professor Dr. Mark Geary is the second presenter and will talk about Visual Literacy. Madison educator Kristin Morse will talk about teaching at a Hutterite Colony School in which English is a second language for students. Colony schools in the past have stopped at 8th grade but now there are some unique school opportunities so students can complete high school requirements as well. The afternoon session will begin with a panel of principals including Rich Brubakken from Medary School in Brookings and superintendent and high school principal Mike Cullen from Howard. That will be followed by an International Panel in which each member will talk about their schooling and how they learned English. Participants will learn how to provide meaningful learning experiences for the English as a Second Language (ESL ) students in their classrooms. The conference will conclude with Charlotte Mohling, Teacher of the Year from the Wessington Springs School District. For more information contact the DSU College of Education at 605-256-5177.
