DSU President Co-Leads Congressional Briefing On Wednesday, April 25, 2007 Dakota State University President Dr. Doug Knowlton, co-led a congressional briefing on issues impacting universities and colleges located in rural areas of the United States. The briefing was organized by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Dr. Knowlton and Dr. Khosrow Fatemi, president of Eastern Oregon University co chaired a group of 126 public universities. The congressional briefing was attended by members of the House of Representatives and staff members from congressional offices. South Dakota's congresswoman Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin was among the representatives attending the briefing. Information was provided on three key areas that impact universities who serve students in rural areas. Those issues included college access, technology access and the economic impact of the universities on the regional economy. Because of the significant issues and challenges faced by these institutions and their potential to have major economic impact, legislation will be proposed to provide additional financial support to these universities. |
