DSU Employment Office Assists Students with Job Search

The Student Employment Office at Dakota State University helped over 600 students find jobs in the Madison area last year.  The jobs were on and off campus, part-time and seasonal work.

Students that held part time jobs earned an average hourly wage of $7.85.  Through those part-time and seasonal jobs, DSU students earned over $2.3 million dollars.

The Student Employment Office offers students an on campus access point to part time and seasonal jobs in Madison and surrounding area; it also offers access to The South Dakota Career Center.  The office also provides service to employers, matching their job needs to students looking for employment.

According to Jacquelyn Miller, DSU’s Career Development Specialist, much research has been done by leading experts in higher education supporting the positive effects of employment on student success.  “Students that work during college have the opportunity to make local connections and feel as though they are a part of the community and not just a college student,” says Miller.  “Part time work also helps build their professional skills to prepare for entry into full time jobs upon graduation.”

Dakota State students were hired for jobs in the local nursing homes, retail businesses and the service sector, as well as in seasonal work at local industries.  DSU also offers spot jobs, where employers can request students to fill specific short-term job needs. On campus jobs include tutoring, student labor positions, and the campus food service.
