DSU Hosts Speaker for Great American Smokeout Day Madison - Brandon Carmichael will be the featured speaker at Dakota State University Thursday, November 16 as part of the annual Great American Smokeout Day. Carmichael’s presentation, “Smoking Got Me – The Story of Brandon Carmichael,” will be at 7:00pm in the Technology Classroom Building Auditorium on the campus of Dakota State. Carmichael is a 26 year old former smoker who had been diagnosed with Buerger’s Disease, a rare disorder of the blood vessels of the arms and legs. Buerger’s Disease causes a combination of inflammation and clotting that obstructs blood flow and is strongly associated with smoking. Carmichael lost part of his leg to the disease and continues to have related health issues. He now travels to schools and communities to speak about the very real dangers of tobacco use. His goal is to educate others about the dangers of smoking, from a personal perspective. The presentation is open to the public and is sponsored by the Tobacco Prevention Grant and the DSU Respiratory Care Club. More information on Brandon Carmichael is on his website http://www.smokinggotme.com.
