DSU English Faculty to Speak at National ConventionThe National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is pleased to announce that John Nelson, Nancy Moose, Maureen Murphy, and Deana Hueners-Nelson will be speaking at the 2006 NCTE Annual Convention on Friday, November 17, 2006. The group will be presenting a classroom demonstration session,
"Getting Students off the Couch and Into Analysis: Strategies for
Teaching Analytical Skills." An excerpt from the description of this
session in the Convention Program reads: This demonstration engages participants in four hands-on classroom activities that together exemplify a spiraling approach to teaching analytical and critical thinking. The activities include literature circles, collaborative film critique, and practice of an analytical method; the demonstration culminates in the application of an analytical method to a writing assignment. John Nelson, one of the four English professors who will be presenting at the conference, says, "This is an excellent opportunity for DSU to demonstrate our commitment to excellence in the classroom. Our pioneering work in wireless mobile computing has enabled students in our writing classes to tackle some activities that would be impossible without them. I anticipate that teachers who come to our presentation will be impressed with the level of integration of wireless computing into our academic work." Each year, the NCTE Annual Convention draws thousands of K-12 teachers, college faculty, administrators, and other educational professionals from around the world. Over 7000 people will gather to hear award-winning speakers, attend idea-packed sessions, share best practices, participate in workshops, and test the latest teaching materials. The 2006 NCTE Annual Convention will be held November 16-21, in Nashville, Tennessee. For more information, visit the NCTE website at www.ncte.org.
