Doctor of Science Degree Announced for DSU

A Doctor of Science in Information Systems has been approved for Dakota State University (DSU).  The program was included in Governor Round’s FY07 budget, and approved by the South Dakota Legislature.

The doctorate, the first offered at Dakota State, is designed to prepare individuals for high-level careers in research, teaching, and corporate or government agency employment.  The curriculum will build on the existing Master of Science in Information Systems degree offered at DSU and will focus on theories and practices related to gathering, storing, retrieving, and analyzing recorded data. The program focuses on multi-disciplinary research projects with a strong emphasis on innovative applications of information systems in areas such as decision support, information assurance and health care.

DSU President Dr. Douglas Knowlton said, “We are so pleased that the Board of Regents, the Governor and now the South Dakota Legislature has approved the awarding of this doctoral degree at Dakota State. The funding that is provided will allow us to hire additional faculty and provide funding for a group of graduate research assistants. DSU’s new faculty, our current faculty and these graduate students will stimulate the kinds of research and development that will have tremendous impact on our region and the whole state of South Dakota.”

The university will begin accepting applicants for the first program group sometime this spring, with the first set of foundation courses offered in Fall ’06 and the doctoral courses offered in Fall ’07.  Classes will be available on campus and through distance education.
