DSU Hosts Classroom Connections Symposium Dakota State University hosted the South Dakota Classroom Connections Symposium July 31 and August 1. The symposium was part of Governor Rounds 2010 Education Initiative and was sponsored through a partnership between the South Dakota Department of Education, Bureau of Information and Telecommunications and Dakota State University. Over 300 teachers from the 20 tablet pilot schools were on the DSU campus for the symposium. Teachers shared strategies with their peers in similar curriculum areas on how to incorporate the laptops into the classroom to enhance learning, specifically to target 21st century skills such as critical thinking, information and communication skills, literacy, and interpersonal and self-direction skills. This training is key to the success of the 1 to 1 computing initiative. Tuesday the group was addressed by Dr. Rick Melmer, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Education and Wade Pogany, Director of Curriculum and Instruction from the Department of Education. Sessions were held in East Hall, Kennedy Center, the Technology Classroom Building (TCB), the Science Center and the Dakota Prairie Playhouse. Numerous Dakota State faculty and staff facilitated the sessions, along with the K-12 Data Center which also played an integral part in the symposium. |
