Dakota State Students Receive $2,500 Citigroup Outstanding Teacher Scholarships for 2006-07 Thirty education majors at public and private colleges and universities in South Dakota have been named winners of the 2006 Citigroup Outstanding Teacher Scholarships and will receive the $2,500 scholarships during a luncheon at Citibank in Sioux Falls on August 11. Of the thirty students, eight attend Dakota State University. The scholarship program was created in 2004 to help address South Dakota’s teacher shortage and encourage promising future educators to remain in the state to live, work and raise their families. The program provides a scholarship to selected students enrolled in a teacher preparation degree program at public and private colleges and universities in South Dakota. Preference is given to students majoring in such areas as special education; elementary, middle school, or secondary education; early childhood and family education; and math, science and technology. Scholarship recipients, who are education majors entering their senior year this fall, promise to remain in South Dakota to teach in a public school for three years after graduation. In the first three years of the program, the Citigroup Foundation and Citibank (South Dakota), N.A., have contributed $202,500 to fund 81 scholarships for South Dakota’s future teachers. The scholarship program is administered by the South Dakota Community Foundation, which also selects the recipients. Dakota State
