Tim Schuring Steps Down as Head Coach Madison - Dakota State University announced today Tim Schuring is stepping down as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the college. He has accepted a position as the high school activities director and assistant principal at Oelwein, IA. Oelwein is in northeastern Iowa, about 35 minutes from Waterloo/Cedar Falls. A native of Prairie City, IA, the move will bring the Schuring closer to family. It will also fulfill one of Tim’s career goals. “When I graduated from college in 1988, I always felt I would get into administration some day. The position at Oelwein opened up a door for the Schuring’s that is too good to pass up.” Schuring and his wife Tracie have three children, son Drake, and daughters Taylor, and Maggie. DSU Athletic Director Gene Wockenfuss had positive comments about Schuring’s four years as head men’s basketball coach. “Tim laid a solid foundation with our men’s basketball program. Integrity, discipline and commitment to doing things right, on and off the court were pillars of Coach Schuring’s philosophy.” Schuring came to DSU in 2001, replacing then head coach Tom Cameron. Under Tim’s guidance, the Trojans went from a 6 win first season in 2001 to 15 wins in 2005 and a second place finish in the Dakota Athletic Conference. Prior to coming to Dakota State, Schuring spent three years as head coach at Saint Mary College in Kansas. He also spent two seasons as the top assistant coach at Iowa Wesleyan College, one season at Central College (IA) as a graduate assistant, and seven years as a head high school coach and educator in the states of Iowa and Illinois. He is a 1988 graduate of Wartburg College (IA), and 1999 Graduate of The United States Sports Academy. In addition to his coaching duties at DSU, Schuring taught in the Physical Education and Exercise Science Department. In 2003-2004 he served as the President for the National Association of Basketball Coaches- NAIA Division. He also coached a team of collegiate athletes in Australia for USA Athletes International where his USA team brought home gold medal honors. Associate Head Coach Wade Kooiman will move into the head men’s basketball job at DSU. Gene Wockenfuss is pleased with the promotion. “Wade Kooiman is a product of the success Coach Schuring has brought to DSU. Wade was instrumental in the recruiting success the men’s basketball program has had the past two years. And although Coach Kooiman will bring fresh ideas to the program, he is also infused with an expectation of competing at a championship level of play.” Kooiman has been the top assistant coach for the Dakota State Men's Basketball program since 2003. In that time his primary duties included coaching post players and putting together the program’s defensive scheme. He also did recruiting of prospective student-athletes, supervised the off-season conditioning for the team, and assisted with the program’s academic support system.
Kooiman's basketball career began at South Dakota
State University where he played one season under
Head Coach Scott Nagy. That season, the Jackrabbits
won the North Central Conference crown and advanced
to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division II. After his
freshman year at South Dakota State University, he
transferred to the University of Mary where he made
his mark as a point guard under Head Coach Jim
Feeney. Kooiman helped the program log 101 wins and
establish itself as a defensive powerhouse in the
DAC-10 Conference. He currently ranks 6th on the
University of Mary's all-time assists list.
