DSU Hosts 1st Annual Spring
Recovery Conference The Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs at Dakota State University will host its first annual Spring Recovery Conference Friday, April 15 on the campus of DSU. Conference sessions will be held in the Underground of the Trojan Center. The conference will feature regional speakers representing such groups as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and the Al-Anon/Alateen Family Support Groups. Erik Miller, Director of the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Office, says the conference is somewhat unique in that it will bring speakers from the various support groups together. “By necessity, recovery groups have a tendency of staying within their particular area of purpose. We’ve witnessed some success recently at area events that bring together some of the groups. Participants discover they share much in common and enjoy the opportunity to hear from the various group perspectives. Plus, it’s just an opportunity to celebrate recovery and have some fun.” Miller says so that much of what we hear in the media focuses on the problems related to addictions. “At this event people are going to hear from those who have discovered answers and solutions as well. We are offering this as a public service to the community and to let regional recovery groups know that all the goods things they are doing is appreciated.” Miller says people who attend can expect to learn more about recovery groups and the resources they offer for individuals and families dealing with addictions. There is no charge for the event, but free will donations will be accepted. The conference will begin with a Speaker Meeting at 7:30 pm. A dance to live music by original recording artists Watermelon Daze will follow at approximately 9:30 pm.
