DSU Grad Program Director Takes High School Principal Position

Sharon Knowlton has been named the principal for Madison Central High School in Madison, SD. She has been serving as the Director of Graduate Programs at Dakota State University. Her new duties will begin August 1.

Prior to her move to Madison, Knowlton, who is the wife of DSU President Dr. Doug Knowlton, was the principal at East Grand Forks High School in East Grand Forks, MN. Knowlton had also held positions as an elementary principal in East Grand Forks and as an English teacher.

The Madison Central School District started looking for a new high school principal in March after current principal Steve Grond announced he had accepted a position as superintendent at a school district in Iowa. Knowlton was among twenty-nine applicants for the MHS principal position.

In reacting to her new role as principal, Knowlton was quoted as saying she is looking forward to more interaction with students, something she missed in her present job as graduated programs director at DSU where most of her students were distance learners.

While Knowlton will be preparing for her new role as principal, she will also aid Dakota State in making a smooth transition in the graduate programs office. The graduate program has seen a steady increase in students since its inception in 1999. Twenty-three master’s graduates will participate in commencement exercises on May 7.
