South Dakota MPLA Board Choice
Award announced Ethelle Bean is the 2005 recipient of the South Dakota Mountain Plains Library Association (MPLA) Board Choice Award. The MPLA is a twelve state association of librarians, library paraprofessionals and friends of libraries in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. The award was announced by Colleen Smith, South Dakota’s state representative to the MPLA. Bean is currently Associate Vice President of Special Projects/Director of Library at Dakota State University and has faculty status as a full professor.
The use of technology to
improve student access to library information has
been of utmost importance to Bean. To enhance
student access, she has maintained the Karl E. Mundt
Library membership in the South Dakota Library
Network (SDLN) for many years and has been an active
advocate for increased funding, staff, and
membership for SDLN, often lobbying state
legislators for their assistance. She has been an
active member of the South Dakota Library
Association (SDLA) for many years, serving in
various capacities including President. In 1992, at
the SDLA Conference Awards, Bean was named South
Dakota Librarian of the Year.
