DSU placement holds steady at 92 percent

By Elisa Sand Madison Daily Leader

Overall placement rates for Dakota State University graduates remained stable when compared to 2003, but the number of students who accepted employment in South Dakota rose.

Director of Career Services Marie Lohsandt said 2004 placement figures look at the graduating students in December 2003 and May 2004 and how many secure employment in their field of study.

In that time, 289 students graduated and 92 percent secured employment, with 85 percent staying in South Dakota.

“That’s good considering the market in the Midwest has slowed down a bit,” Lohsandt said. “I’m very pleased with 92 percent.”

In 2003, 92 percent of the 248 graduated secured employment in their fields of study with 81 percent staying in South Dakota.

Lohsandt said the fact that 20 students in 2003 and 24 students in 2004 did not secure employment could be due to a number of factors.

“It’s not for lack of jobs,” she said. “(But) they may have to work a little harder to find them and start earlier with networking and making contacts.”

Students also need to start preparing in the months prior to graduation, she said,

Another factor to consider, she said, is that some students don’t look for employment immediately, while others limit their job search to a specific geographic area. Still others with job are continuing their education and not seeking new employment.

“There are a lot of variables,” she said. “That 8 percent could be otherwise employed or just not seeking employment.”

But DSU’s reputation for its technology integration helps students secure jobs.

“We are known for our technology components, which elevate placement across the board—even in teaching degrees.”

Those degree areas with 100 percent placement include English for information systems, business management, elementary education/special education, health information administration, fitness/wellness management and respiratory care.
