DSU to Host ‘Tablet PC Technology in Education’ Event Educators across South Dakota have been invited to attend a one day “Tablet PC Technology in Education” event, Friday, March 26 on the campus of Dakota State University in Madison, SD. The focus of the day will be to introduce the abilities that Tablet PCs bring to education and the classroom technology integration that DSU has implemented during this school year. This event is being underwritten by Gateway. All sessions and presentations will be held in the newly remodeled Technology Classroom Building. There will be three sessions during the day with breakout presentations at each session. The day will begin with registration and a complimentary breakfast in the Karl Mundt Library, followed by a welcome by DSU President Dr. Doug Knowlton. This will be followed by panel discussion by DSU students and faculty on the scope of the Tablet PC project on the campus. The DSU students on the panel are members of the Center of Excellence and have been beta-testing the Gateway Tablet for five months, using it in classroom environments and providing demonstrations at locations off campus. They will share their experiences with attendees. Session 1 will begin at 10:10am. Breakout presentations include ‘DSU and Tablet PCs’ with DSU faculty member Dr. Rick Chistoph, and ‘Tablet 101’, a hands on demonstration of the tablets with DSU faculty member Tom Farrell. Also available will be sessions by faculty members from Pocahontas (Iowa) Area Community Schools. The Pocahontas Area Community School District purchased Gateway Tablet PCs for each of its staff members, replacing overhead projectors, TVs, VCRs, classroom computers and eventually the schools phone system. Presenters will discuss the project from conception to implementation. The forth breakout presentation of Session 1 will feature representatives from Microsoft who will give attendees an overview of the features of the Tablet PC. Session 2 will begin at 11:10 in the Technology Classroom Building. Breakout presentations will include a DSU instructional demonstration by DSU faculty members Gabe Mydland and Chris Maynard and DSU’s Chief Information Officer Dave Zolnowsky discussing DSU’s network infrastructure. Tom Farrell’s hands on Tablet PC presentation will also be offered during Session 2. The forth presentation will be ‘Learning with Laptops’ by faculty members of Watertown School District. Attendees will hear about the process that brought laptops to Watertown, how teachers are using the laptops, and what the district is doing to insure the success of the program. At noon attendees will adjourn to the Karl Mundt Library for lunch sponsored by Gateway. Rick Melmer, South Dakota’s Secretary of Education, will be the keynote speaker. Session 3 will begin in the TCB at 1:30. Breakout presentations include a DSU instructional demonstration by faculty members Rick Puetz and Wendy Zolnowsky, along with Tom Farrell’s hands on Tablet PC presentation. Brad Bell will present ‘Wireless projections and plasmas in the classroom’ and representatives of Microsoft will demonstrate features of Office 2003 and OneNote. Closing events will being at 2:20 with a question and answer session in TCB room 203.
