DSU
Names Director for Center of Information Assurance Kevin Streff has been appointed Director of the Center of Information Assurance at Dakota State University. The position was established following the university’s designation by the National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. DSU is one of just 60 Center of Excellence universities across the country. The Center will be a point of coordination for various activities relating to Information Assurance including student and faculty education, research and service activities. “The center will enable us to coordinator these disparate activities to optimize our resources and bring the most value possible to the audiences that we serve,” says Streff. Streff has been with DSU since 2002 as an instructor in the College of Business and Information Systems. He is a Dakota State alumnus, graduating with the first class after the mission change in 1988. Following college, Streff gained valuable real-life experience, spending time working in the private sector, and at one point running a large scale data center with a $30 million a year annual budget. “Information security was a big piece of that,” Streff says. Last summer Streff attended classes in Washington D.C. and obtained a certificate in information assurance. This expertise helped him spearhead DSU’s charge for a Center of Excellence program through the National Security Agency. The university had to go through a rigorous process, demonstrating that it had the capability of being a Center of Excellence. Those efforts were rewarded this spring when the NSA gave Dakota State its formal designation. “Computer Security, Information Assurance, and Homeland Security are important issues that affect each of us in our professional and personal lives,” said Streff. “I am thankful to Dr. Knowlton and Dakota State University for this opportunity to lead this important Center that provides educational and research opportunities for faculty and students in the quest to better secure our businesses, governments, homes, and nation.” |
