National Student Employment Week

National Student Employment Week is April 11-17. Dakota State University is marking the event by honoring an on-campus and an off-campus student employee. Students were nominated for the award by their employers. A group of faculty and staff from Dakota State reviewed the nominations and chose the winners.

On Campus Student Employee of the Year for 2004 is Nick Huntimer. Nick is from Oldham and is pursuing a degree in Business Education. He was nominated by DSU Athletic Director Dr. Tom Gioglio and the DSU Athletic Department. Nick has been working in the Athletic Department for three years, and has duties as an administrative assistant and sports information specialist. Nick also serves as the assistant event manager.

Describing why he chose to nominate Nick for On-Campus Student Employee of the Year, Gioglio wrote, "Nick is a valuable member of the athletic department. He is an amazing individual. He exemplifies courage and has taught the coaches and I that no matter how difficult the task, it can be achieved. Nick is an outstanding student, who has maintained a 3.5 GPA and is listed on the Athletic Directors Scholar Honor Roll. Nick's tireless work ethic and commitment to the success of the athletic department and Dakota State University makes him a very deserving and worthy candidate for the 2004 Student Employee of the Year."

As the On Campus Student Employee of the Year, Nick’s nomination was submitted for state-wide recognition and he was also selected as the “South Dakota Student Employee of the Year” by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators.

The Off Campus Student Employee of the Year Award was given to Matt Larson from Madison. Matt is a senior majoring in Computer Science and was nominated by his employer, Jim Hockett, General Manager of KJAM Radio. Matt has been working at KJAM for over two years as an announcer and web master.

When describing why he chose to nominate Matt for Off-Campus Student Employee of the Year, Hockett wrote, "Matt is the type of employee that all employers and co-workers hope for. He is so easy going and never shows his frustrations. He handles situations in a professional manner and keeps his sense of humor when things are not going as planned. Just recently he was awarded the "Most Improved Employee for 2003" at KJAM Radio. With this type of dedication and commitment, Matt Larson will most definitely have a bright and successful future."

The Off-Campus and On-Campus Student Employees of the Year will be recognized at the Dakota State University Awards Banquet later in April, and will receive a certificate of recognition and a $50 cash award from DSU, plus an additional $50 cash award generously donated by T & R Electric of Colman, SD.

As the “South Dakota Student Employee of the Year” Nick Huntimer will receive a certificate of recognition, and an additional $75 award from the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators.
