DSU Professor in Poetry Reading with Poet Laureate

Dakota State University professor John Nelson will be participating in the Vermillion Literary Project Fall Festival on October 28-30 in Vermillion. The Vermillion Literary Project is a student organization at the University of South Dakota that publishes a literary magazine and promotes literacy events at the college.

Nelson will be sharing some of his work at USD on Friday, October 29, at a poetry reading that will feature newly appointed Poet Laureate Ted Kooser. Kooser is the 13th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress and began his duties this fall. He is the author of ten collections of poetry, most recently “Delights and Shadows” (2004). Among Kooser’s honors and awards are two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Pushcart Prize, the Stanley Kunitz Prize, the James Boatwright Prize and a Merit Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. He is a visiting professor in the English department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Nelson has been at DSU since 1996 and is currently an Assistant Professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. He has been working on his Ph. D through USD and hopes to have it completed this month.
