Championship Weekend
The athletic
department at Dakota State University and the Dakota State Alumni
Association are sponsoring Championship Weekend on April 23 and
24.
Events for the weekend include a DSU track meet at Trojan Field on
Friday afternoon and an alumni sponsored kick-off party at the
Madison Country Club Friday evening.
Saturday’s events will begin with a complimentary continental
breakfast at 9:30 at the DSU Fieldhouse, followed by tours of that
facility and other campus areas. The Trojan Volleyball team will
take on an alumni volleyball team at 11:30 at the Fieldhouse and
there will be a Blue and Gold intersquad football scrimmage at
1:30 at Trojan Field. The DSU Softball and Baseball teams will
also be playing double-headers Saturday, taking on the teams from
Mayville, ND at 1:00 and 3:00 at Thue and Flynn Fields.
Championship Weekend will culminate with the 4th Annual Springfest
Party, held at Nicky’s restaurant. Springfest was started by DSU
Athletics in 2000 as a way to raise money for athletic
scholarships at the university and to give the public an
opportunity to meet the coaching staff at Dakota State. Guests are
invited to Nicky’s for an all you can eat buffet, silent auction
and gaming. All proceeds raised from the event are targeted for
athletic scholarships.
This year the Dakota State Alumni Association is co-sponsoring the
Championship Weekend and the annual Springfest Party. Special
honorees at the Springfest Party will be past Athletic All
Americans from Dakota State. “We have such a strong tradition of
producing All American caliber athletes at Dakota State and the
Alumni Association wanted to put the spotlight on these talented
individuals,” said Alumni Association President-Elect Cindy
Schultz. The Athletic All Americans will be special guests of the
Alumni Association for the weekend, and presented with a memento
of their Athletic All American honor at Springfest.
Along with donations from area businesses, items for the
Springfest silent auction include autographed baseballs from
former New York Yankee Goose Gossage and Minnesota Twin Harmon
Killebrew. Also included are an autographed mini helmet from
Cincinnati Reds great Pete Rose and a autographed framed and
matted photo of former Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers.
The alumni sporting events for the weekend are free of charge.
Tickets for the Springfest Party are $20/person and can be
reserved by contacting the DSU Athletic Department at 605-256-5229
or through the Alumni Office at 605-256-5857.
