DSU Athletics to roast DSU President Dr. Jerry Tunheim

The Dakota State University Athletic Department will honor retiring DSU President Dr. Jerry Tunheim at the 4th Annual DSU Athletic Booster Stag on Thursday, November 20th.  Stags are traditionally thought of as men-only events, but this year the doors will be open to everyone as friends and colleagues are invited to gather and roast Dr. Tunheim.

“Everyone is invited to help us wish Dr. Tunheim well in his retirement.  We have things planned that should appeal to men and women, such as darts, billiards, gaming, a buffet dinner, and the silent auction,” said DSU Athletic Director Dr. Tom Gioglio.  He says he hopes to continue the precedent of successes from DSU Stags of years past. Athletic Booster Brian Kern was honored in 2002, legendary Coach Ed Harter in 2001.  “Dr. Tunheim has been an excellent champion for athletics at DSU,” commented Gioglio, “and we are excited about having this opportunity to wish him well in the future by honoring him at the Stag and Roast.”

Citing the President’s visibility at DSU sporting events, Gioglio said, “Dr. Tunheim has been our number one athletic fan.”  He also noted the improvements completed under Dr. Tunheim’s leadership, including the renovation to the Fieldhouse and football stadium, the upgraded training and locker rooms, and the addition of the Community Center.  “The impact those renovations and new buildings had on recruitment has been tremendous. Potential students are impressed with what DSU has to offer here.  Thanks to Dr. Tunheim’s vision for athletics at DSU we have some of the best facilities in the conference and nation.”

Dr. Tunheim has served as President of Dakota State University since 1987.  He has been active and held offices in several national and state organizations.  On the local level, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Area Improvement Corporation, and the MAP (Madison Area Planning) 2004 Committee, as well as Madison Rotary and Trinity Lutheran Church.

The 4th Annual DSU Stag and Roast will be held Thursday, November 20 at Nicky’s restaurant in Madison starting at 6 pm.  Tickets are available in advance.  The price of $50 includes:

ü      One Season Pass to all Home DSU Athletic Contests ($120.00 value)

ü      Dinner Buffet – All You Can Eat

ü      Open Bar

ü      Gaming

ü      Silent Auction (Featuring autographed professional sports memorabilia and special items donated by Madison area merchants.)

All proceeds from this event go to support DSU Athletic scholarships.  For ticket information or if you would like to take a turn roasting Dr. Jerry Tunheim, contact Dr. Tom Gioglio at 605-256-5233 or 605-256-5229 or e-mail at Tom.Gioglio@dsu.edu.
