Second
phase of DSU wireless network begins
Center
of Excellence students install wireless network on campus
Dakota State
University Center of Excellence students have been pulling wire
and installing access points for the campus wireless network.
Students started the process in East Hall, where four access
points were installed.
Jon Florey, a senior
E-commerce major from Watertown, has helped organize the
installation process. Craig Miller, Dakota State University
Network Administrator for Computing Services, has worked closely
with Florey on the infrastructure and user devices to make the
wireless network a reality on campus. Florey has scheduled weekly
meetings with a staff of students from the Center of Excellence.
According to Miller,
having the students install the infrastructure is a great benefit
to both the students and the university.
“It gives the
students a good, practical experience,” Miller said. “The
students have a much greater understanding of how the system works
by installing it themselves.”
All the wire has been pulled and
access points have been installed in opposite corners of East Hall
for each floor. This is done to maximize the coverage of each
access point.
“The signal can bleed between
floors,” said Florey. “Those on the network on second floor
could be getting their signal from the third floor access point,
depending on where they’re at on the floor.”
Each access point
gets its power from the Ethernet cable it’s hooked up to.
The Mundt Library
access points will be installed before the unveiling of the
wireless network at the Center of Excellence Symposium on April
22.
Students who have helped with the
installation are: sophomore Eric Schneider, a Computer Science
major from Faulkton; sophomore Dusty Schnabel a Computer
Information Systems major from Mitchell; junior Andrew Zimmer, a
Computer Information Systems major from Montrose; freshman Jeff
Gabhart, a Computer Science major from Sioux Center, IA; Junior
Joel Brunick, a Computer Science major from Watertown; junior Jon
Waldman, an Information Systems major from Ipswich; senior
Jonathon Watson, a Management Information Systems major from
Spearfish; junior Justin Luitjens, a Computer Science major from
Aberdeen and sophomore Adam Hafner, an E-commerce major from
Mitchell.
