Dakota State University Goes Wireless
Dakota
State University, already recognized as one of the most
“Wired” campuses in the nation, is excited to announce the
availability of its new wireless network to DSU students
beginning in Fall 2002. This means students will have the
opportunity to connect to the DSU computer network and the
Internet from literally anywhere on the campus. Since you have
been accepted for admission to DSU, we are sure you may have some
questions regarding how you might use this exciting new network.
Exactly what is the wireless network?
Answer:
This is a campus-wide wireless network using the 802.11b (also
called WIFI) standard. This means that students with a
wireless-enabled device can connect to the network at up to 11
million bits per second for true, high-speed connectivity (this is
over 300 times faster than a standard modem).
Where on campus will the wireless network operate?
Answer:
You can connect to the wireless network in classroom buildings,
the library, and the Trojan Student Center. You can even connect
when you are outside between buildings in the outdoor quad areas.
Does this mean I can send email and surf the Internet
wherever I happen to be? Answer: Yes, the wireless connection
operates like any other high-speed connection and allows you to
connect to any available resource on the DSU network. You can even
be connected while walking between buildings.
What kind of equipment do I need to use the wireless
system?
Answer:
You will first need a laptop or hand-held computer compatible with
wireless capabilities (see the attached sheet for some examples).
The laptop option will allow you to have a full-function, portable
computer that can be carried to any location on campus. You can
also choose to purchase a hand-held device such as a Compaq iPAQ,
which is similar to a personal data assistant (PDA) but
allows full Internet and network use. This might be a good choice
if you choose to have both a desktop PC and a wireless device.
Will I need a special wireless connection device?
Answer:
Yes. You will need a wireless network card that you can buy at
the DSU Bookstore upon your arrival. If you choose to buy your
wireless card elsewhere, our network requires the CISCO AIR-PCM352 Aironet 350 series PC
Card w/ diversity Antennas &128-bit WEP.
Regardless
of where you purchase your network card, DSU Computing Services
Department must activate your wireless account and ensure it is
protected for network security. There is no other special
equipment you will require.
Will I still be able to use DSU computer labs?
Answer:
Yes. There will be times when you will want to use a specific DSU
lab to access special software or hardware.
However, most of your computing needs will be available to
you over the wireless network.
Are there special classes that will use the wireless network?
Answer:
Yes. There are two classes available in the fall semester: CSC 105(Section
8) Introduction
to Computers and CIS 130 (Section 2) Visual Basic
Programming. You must have your own laptop computer to register
for these special class sections.
