DSU announces speech contest winners

           The Karl E. Mundt Foundation recently provided awards for the winners of the second annual Karl Mundt Speech Contest for DSU students enrolled in general education communication courses.

The contest was held Wednesday, April 24 on the DSU campus. Twenty-eight students competed in informative and persuasive speaking events. The top three winners in each event received cash awards of $150 for first place, $125 for second place and $100 for third place.

Miles Rausch was the fortunate freshman who took first place in both categories winning $300.00 for his public speaking efforts.

Other finalists in informative speaking were: second place, Margaret Lankford; third place, Jessie Dunbar; fourth place, Mardi Clyde; fifth place, Levi Hentges and sixth place, Quinn Swenson.

Other finalists in persuasive speaking were: second place Andrew Williams; third place, Quinn Swenson; fourth place Mark Nelson; fifth place, Erica Halverson and sixth place, Nathaniel Ferguson.

Judges for the preliminary rounds were DSU faculty and staff including: Terry Ryan, Deb Knutsen, Rise Smith, Alan Montgomery, Todd Quinn, Michael Laffey, Michelle Glaros, Donna Hazelwood, Deana Hueners, Linda Merkwan, Lynn Ryan, Dan Talley, Roger Reed, Tom Nesser, Carrie Ahern, and Susan Conover.

Final round judges included: Madison Mayor, Royce Hueners, Chamber of Commerce Director, Darci Stewart, DSU Vice Presidents Cecilia Wittmayer and Marilyn Fowle and College of Liberal Arts faculty, John Nelson and Robbin Schincke.

The event was organized by Dr. Robert Jackson, DSU associate professor of Liberal Arts, with assistance from DSU faculty, Jim Swanson, Deana Hueners, Nancy Moose, Susan Conover and the College of Liberal Arts.
