Dakota State offers programming certificates

Dakota State University will be offering non-credit programming certificates in three programming areas starting this fall.

The certificates provide programming skills in an anytime, anyplace format. The courses are self-paced, which means that the student can work at their own pace over a 16 week period. If that is not enough time, a student can purchase a 4-week extension.

“The courses are set up for the student to work on their own,” Deb Gearhart, DSU Director of Distance Education said. “The students work on programming exercises included on the course Web site. There is a support desk in place where the students can email or call with questions. At the end of the course the students request to take the exam and upon successful completion of the exam they are awarded the certificate.”

The courses are in three programming areas, C++ programming, Visual Basic Programming and COBOL. There is a beginner and advanced course in each programming language. A student can earn a certificate in one of the programming areas or all three. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded for the courses.

The courses are $310 each plus the price of the texts.  It is $50 for a 4-week extension and $50 if you have to retake the test.

Working adults who want to gain some programming skills and need the flexibility of anytime, anyplace learning can benefit from these programs.

“There are many people who are looking to improve their skills in the workplace but are not necessarily looking for a college credit course or program,” Gearhart stated. “This certificate program provides those students with the expertise of the DSU faculty in an easy and flexible learning environment.”

Students from anywhere will be able to take these courses.

“We also hope to draw in international students interested in acquiring programming skills,” added Gearhart. “If you have limited time and like to work on your own this type of certificate course is for you. You can develop or improve your programming skills and enhance your marketability in the workplace.”
