Dakota State reports Career Placement Rates for Class of 2002

Madison --  Despite the slowing economy, Dakota State University officials reported an astonishing 96 percent overall career placement success rate for the Class of 2002. Several areas reported 100 percent placement:  Computer Science, Multimedia/Web Development, English for Information Systems, Math for Information Systems, Business Management, Professional Accounting, Health Information Administration, Respiratory Care, and Secondary Education.

“In light of the current economy, we were pleased to see an increase over last year’s placement rate,” said Dr. Jerald Tunheim, President of Dakota State University.  “The demand for graduates with strong computer and information technology skills remains high.”

According to Marie Lohsandt, Director of Career Services at DSU, the computer science and computer information systems graduates saw the highest salary offers among all the academic disciplines, reporting an average of $34,314 and $32,604 respectively.  The overall starting average salary for the Class of 2002 was $27,130.  She also noted that education graduates hovered in the $24,000-$27,800 range.

Geographically, 78 percent of Dakota State graduates placed in their field chose to remain in South Dakota, which is consistent with 80 percent from last year.  Of the teacher education graduates, 84 percent accepted positions within the state, an increase of 13 percent over last year.
