Dakota State Trojan football hires offensive
line coach
Dakota State University head football coach, Gene Wockenfuss recently announced the hiring of Brookings native, Mark Hanson as Offensive Line coach and resident director of Higbie Hall. Hanson comes to the Trojans from South Dakota State University where he served as a tight ends/offensive line coach. “I’m excited about Mark coming to DSU. Because he’s a South Dakota native it will allow us to secure top recruits in the surrounding area,” said Wockenfuss. “He’ll bring a real stability to the offensive side of the ball and in particular to the offensive line.” Hanson was a four-year starter on the offensive line for the University of Sioux Falls from 1994-1997, helping the Cougars win the 1996 National Championship. He graduated from USF in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education. Upon graduation, Hanson started graduate school at SDSU and will complete his Master’s degree in Sports Pedagogy in June of this year. “This is a great opportunity for myself. I believe the Dakota State program is stepping up in the right direction and definitely changing its ways,” said Hanson, who played against Dakota State during his career at USF. “Comparing Dakota State now to then, you can definitely tell the change of attitude. And facilities wise it’s on the move up. I’m very excited to be here.” As a player, Hanson started in 39 games, 26 of which were consecutively. The overall record of the teams he played with was 35-12. As an assistant coach, Hanson has been on both sides of the ball, coaching defensive tackles, tight ends and the offensive line. He has also served as equipment manager, strength and conditioning coach, offensive scout team coach, and has put on high school summer football camps. “Mark’s playing and coaching experience speaks for itself,” added Wockenfuss. “He will be a real difference maker for our coaching staff.” |
