DSU
faculty members chosen as a model university teaching team
Dakota
State University instructor of Education, Crystal Pauli and
associate professor of Education Marva Gellhaus have been selected
by The Learning Disabilities Association of America as one of ten
model university teaching teams across the country. They were
selected based on their efforts to model collaboration for general
education and special education students and to give these
university students the opportunity to practice collaboration.
Students
from Pauli’s Classroom Diversity Class for general education
students and Gellhaus’ Learning Disabilities Class for special
education students are given the opportunity to support and
practice collaboration as part of their undergraduate experience.
Pauli and Gellhaus model collaborative strategies for pre-service
teachers at the university level and give university students from
general education and special education the opportunity to work
jointly on projects. Joint projects include class scheduling,
writing IEP objectives, creating modified lesson plans, evaluating
case studies, and identifying professional roles and
responsibilities to produce productive environments in the
inclusive classroom.
For
their efforts Pauli and Gellhaus received a $1,000 stipend to
cover expenses for the International Learning Disabilities
Conference in Denver, CO February 13-16, 2002.
“This
conference will give Dr. Gellhaus and Ms. Pauli the opportunity to
enhance their knowledge in learning disabilities and to integrate
current theory and practices into their undergraduate courses,”
stated Dr. Tom Hawley, Dean of the College of Education at Dakota
State. |
