Wieman Family endowment scholarship established

Madison – The Dakota State University Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Hilbertus A. and Goldie A. Wieman Family Scholarship.  The endowment is a memorial to Hilbertus, husband of Goldie and father of Glenda, Eldon, Norman, Carol, Gloria, Randy and David.    Hilbertus passed away in 1998.

“We are honored that Goldie has chosen to remember her husband and family through a scholarship at Dakota State,” said Dr. Jerald Tunheim, president of DSU.

Five of the Weiman children received their degrees from Dakota State and at times there were two attending at the same time.  Eldon began the process by enrolling at Dakota State (then General Beadle) in the fall of 1960 and graduated in the spring of 1964.  Glenda attended from 1961-1963, graduating in 1963.  Norman entered in the fall of 1964 and graduated in the spring of 1969.    Carol graduated in 1972.  Gloria attended from the fall of 1970 and graduated in the spring of 1974.

Hilbertus, along with Goldie, promoted higher education for their children and from time to time had to shift their priorities and plans so that their children could attend Dakota State and pursue a degree.

“The Wieman’s have a legacy at Dakota State, with five alumni among the family.  Establishing a scholarship endowment translates that legacy into a gift that will touch the lives of future generations of DSU students,” said Jona Schmidt, Director of Planned & Major Gifts at DSU.    “We are grateful to Goldie and her family for their belief in higher education and for their generous gift to the University.”

The first recipient of the scholarship is Lindsay Dykstra from Marion. She is an incoming freshman and will play volleyball for Dakota State.

Criteria for the scholarship includes those who require financial assistance and are academically deserving and will be new incoming students (freshman or transfer) who demonstrate qualities of leadership and good character.   Preference will be given to those who will participate in athletics at DSU and are graduates of the following high schools:  Marion, Canistota, Harrisburg,

Tri-Valley, and Madison.  All of the high schools were selected for the scholarship because of a  connection one of the Wieman’s had with the town.
