Schuring named DSU head men’s basketball coach

Dakota State University athletic director, Dr. Tom Gioglio has announced the hiring of head men’s basketball coach Tim Schuring. Schuring comes to Dakota State from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, KS, where he was the head men’s basketball coach, assistant athletic director, sports management and physical education department chair and intramural director.

“Tim brings to Dakota State a wealth of recruiting experience as well as proven success,” said Dr. Gioglio. “In just three years he took a team from eight wins to 24 wins and a NAIA sweet 16 appearance.”

Schuring’s team finished this past season 24-9, while recording the schools first ever NAIA National tournament bid and top 20 ranking in NAIA Division II.  In addition, his 2000-2001 squad captured Saint Mary’s first ever regular season Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Championship. Along with his team’s accomplishments, Schuring was named the KCAC men’s basketball coach of the year. During his reign as head coach at Saint Mary College nine All-Conference performers and one All-American graced the court.

“I plan to recruit the best players possible that will fit into the philosophy of the institution to help us develop the highest level of success possible,” said Schuring. “I look forward to starting.”

As well as success on the court, Schuring’s athletes enjoyed success in the classroom. Schuring implemented academic guidelines for his players, thus producing four academic All-Americans and a 100 percent graduation rate for his senior athletes.

Schuring didn’t just coach a successful basketball program, he also helped raise funds for the program by establishing “Friends of the Program,” which grew its membership to 120+ in three years. He also directed camps, leagues and tournaments for youth, administered the program’s budget and scheduled games for varsity, junior varsity and intramural teams.

Schuring graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA in December 1988 with a BA in Social Studies Education before receiving his MS degree in Sports Management from United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL in May 1999.

Tim will start his duties on Monday, April 2. He and his wife Traci will be moving to Madison along with their two children, Drake (4) and Taylor (3).
