DSU, PBL Business Club members
compete at state leadership conference
Nine Phi Beta Lambda (PBL)
Business Club members represented Dakota State University at the 2001 Spring
State Leadership Conference, held in Pierre, April 1-2. They competed against
over 100 other students from colleges and universities throughout the state.
These students took standardized
tests in various academic areas as well as competing in the Ms. Future Business
Teacher event. As it was last year, the event was judged by local bank
presidents, civic leaders and state government officials in Pierre. Again they
were impressed by the quality of the presentations they evaluated.
Sophomores Tracy Steed, a business
education major from Roseville, CA; Kerry Terwilliger, a management major from
Winfred; Jessica Fritzsche, a management major from Wessington; April Fernau, a
business management major from Bonesteel; Carissa Persoon, a management
information systems major from Tyler, MN and Stacey Sherburne, an information
systems major from Kadoka, along with juniors Nicky Volin, a finance major from
Sioux Falls and Kevin Deilke, an office management major from Aberdeen attended
the conference with senior Brad Wirth, an accounting major from Excelsior, MN.
Senior Shannon Proehl, an information major from Rushmore, MN prepared and
submitted the chapter web site for competition, but did not attend.
“All of the participants deserve
a special commendation for their superb representation of Dakota State
University at this conference,” said Dan Talley, Co-advisor of the business
PBL club. “Their positive attitude and support of each other made the
conference successful and fun for everyone. And moreover, they have taken on the
responsibility to make significant contributions to the future leadership of the
state PBL organization.
Fritzsche stepped down as State
Parliamentarian and was elected State Historian. Steed was elected State
Treasurer. “This means DSU will provide unprecedented leadership for the State
PBL,” said Talley. “We have high expectations for these creative and
energetic individuals and are confident they will represent the chapter and the
state especially well this year.
DSU took home six 1st place, four 2nd place and two
3rd place honors in competition with other chapters, including a 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place sweep in Computer Applications. Seven people placed in the top three
in at least one event and have earned the right to compete at the National
Conference in Orlando, FL this summer. In addition, the chapter took second
place in the web site competition, giving Proehl the opportunity to attend the
National Conference as well.
“Jessica and Tracey’s presence as executive officers and the sweep in
the field of computer applications testify to the potential for outstanding
leadership and academic excellence of the students at Dakota State
University,” added Talley.
