DSU teaches local elementary students programming

Dakota State University recently hosted a computer programming course for fourth grade elementary students. Logo is a computer programming language required of all elementary education majors at DSU. It is designed to be accessible to all and useable at an early age. It helps with geometrical concepts and is based on a trial and error correction method of programming.

Local fourth grade teacher, Laurie Macziewski, recently brought her students to a computer lab on the campus of Dakota State. Elementary education majors helped teach these students the basics of the Logo program. Shannon Smith, a freshman elementary education major from De Smet, SD assisted Macziewski and student teacher, Jennifer Krier, a senior elementary education major from Sioux Falls, SD.

“I think this event demonstrates the commitment DSU’s college of education has toward working with area educators, public school students, and college of education students to learn about technology and to learn how to infuse technology into the public school curriculum,” said Joe Bishop, DSU assistant professor of education.
