DSU Professor Seeks South Dakota History

Madison – Dr. Julie Smith, Associate Professor of History at Dakota State University, is seeking South Dakota artifacts from the period between the Great Depression and World War II.  The information gathered will help Dr. Smith create a virtual South Dakota archive.

The project is part of an alternative delivery grant Dr. Smith applied for at Dakota State.  When completed, the virtual archive web site can be accessed by anyone in the world.  As part of the project, students in Smith’s classes will learn how to edit historical documents and will maintain the web site.

Smith is requesting donations of items from South Dakota residents.  She is looking for letters, pictures, diaries, check stubs, accounting ledgers, etc. from the years 1925-1945.

If you would like to donate items, please contact Dr. Smith at 605-256-7118 or email smithju@pluto.dsu.edu.  Items can also be mailed to Dr. Julie Smith, Dakota State University, 820 N. Washington, Madison, SD  57042.  Items will be returned if requested.
