Peer Resource Room now available at DSU (Madison, SD) The Dakota State University Student Development Office has started a Peer Resource Room for DSU students. Keith Bundy, Director of Student Development says the student development office is happy to offer the room to students who need the help. Peer Resource Assistants will be on hand to assist students with basic academic skills or with self and career exploration up to 32 hours per week. “We’re excited to offer this service to all DSU students,” said Bundy. “DSU has needed this very thing.” Currently, three peer assistants are available to students and a fourth will be available at the start of spring semester. Students who want to be a peer assistant must meet certain criteria. “To qualify, students have to have goals and academic skills,” said Bundy. “Afterwards, we give the students training and aids to help them.” Laura Harrison, a junior elementary/special education major from Gillette, WY; Sonya Woodell-Hoepfer, a sophomore accounting major from Pierre, SD; Jennifer Twedt, a junior elementary/special education major from Beresford, SD and Sheri Svatos, a freshman finance major from Lake Andes, SD have been accepted as peer assistants. Students who are chosen as peer assistants are offered $300 scholarships if they are available for at least four hours per week. “This is a brand new service at DSU and we received funding for it last month,” said Bundy. “We decided to pay the students with scholarships because they are providing a service. They are putting their academic and decision making skills to use to help other students gain those skills.” Information is also available in the office on labor market statistics, career exploration, starting salaries, among much more. Bundy says that information is available to students even when peer assistants are not. “Students can come here anytime while the office is open,” said Bundy. “If they need a place to study, they can come here.” The Peer Resource Room opened almost two weeks ago, and Bundy says he anticipates it will be a hit with students. “It should take off after Thanksgiving and at the start of next semester,” said Bundy. Bundy says this is just the beginning of a new service at DSU. “We have vision modifications,” said Bundy. “We want to change the way the room looks as well as provide interactive study skills.”
The Peer Resource Room is open Monday through Thursday. Hours are as
