PATRICK R. MARONEY SCHOLARSHIP
 ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED

(Madison, SD) Patrick R. Maroney, owner and operator of Maroney’s Bar in Howard, recently established an endowed scholarship at Dakota State University.  Maroney, a 1968 graduate of the Madison based university, created the permanent endowment to assist either incoming or continuing students who demonstrate qualities of leadership, good character and personal responsibility.  Preference will be given to graduates of Howard High School but all South Dakota students are eligible.   The first Maroney scholarship award was given to Tami Schwader, an incoming freshman and a graduate of Howard High School.

“It is important to me,” said Mr. Maroney, “that I share some of what the community has given to me.  I think that every citizen has that obligation.  My college days were important to me and higher education has gotten so expensive that I just wanted to help.”

“All of our donors are special,” said Dr. Jerald Tunheim, DSU president, “but when alumni contribute we are extra appreciative.  Receiving support from the DSU alumni community is like help from within the family.  There is a special joy in both the giving and the receiving.  In addition, Pat represents the local business community and sets a fine example for others.  This endowment will help deserving students for generations.”

More than seventy percent of the students who enter Dakota State University apply for and are qualified to receive some sort of financial aid.  Last year the DSU Foundation distributed nearly $400,000 worth of academic and athletic scholarship in almost 600 awards to both incoming and continuing students.
