DSU’s Deb Gearhart receives research award

Deb Gearhart, director of distance education at Dakota State, recently attended the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study (AACIS) annual conference in Austin, TX.  Deb was the outgoing President of the organization and received the 2000 Specialty Books Award for Research in Independent Study for a research project entitled, “DSU Online: Program Assessment for an Online Program.”
“I was thrilled to find out that the organization thought my paper was an appropriate paper for the award,” said Gearhart. “It was on assessment of an online program and I had benchmarked with my colleagues in AACIS.” The paper was a research project from a course in Gearhart’s PhD program and was a unanimous decision by the awards committee.

Gearhart also made two presentations at the conference. The first was “Ethics in Distance Education: Creating Ethical Policy” and the other was “DSU Online: Program Assessment for an Online Program.”

Haomin Wang, DSU Instructional Technologist and assistant professor of instructional technology, is currently the Chair of the Web Committee for AACIS and gave a presentation entitled “Multimedia for Web-based Distance Learning.”
