Dakota State prepares for Fall graduation ceremonies


            Dakota State University will graduate over 40 students at winter commencement this Sunday, December 17 at 2pm in the Dakota Prairie Playhouse. The graduating class also includes the first seven students from the Master’s of Science for Information Systems (MSIS) program. Sunday’s commencement speaker will be Dakota State University Alumni President, Dr. Jay Trenhaile.

Trenhaile graduated from Dakota State University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Physical Education. He continued his education at Kansas State University where he earned a M.S. degree in Adult and Continuing Education. He completed a M.S. in Counseling and Human Resource Development from South Dakota State University, and his Ed.D. in Educational Psychology and Counseling was earned at the University of South Dakota in 1996.

Currently, Dr. Trenhaile is an Assistant Professor for the Counseling and Human Resource Development Department at South Dakota State University.  He also serves as school psychologist or school counselor for four schools in South Dakota and Minnesota. 

            Dr. Trenhaile has written articles for professional journals and routinely presents papers at regional and national conferences.  He was also a contributing author for “The Lives and Legacies of Everyday Heroes” published this fall by Unlimited Publishing.  He received a Governor’s Faculty Award for Teaching with Technology in Summer 2000.  He is a member of several state and national professional organizations.

            Dr. Trenhaile and his wife Kelly live in Brookings with their three children, Thayer, Kara, and Westin.
